More about this list

Where can someone play without joining a club? This list gathers the meetings run by libraries, parishes, associations and a university. In Bielefeld the Generationen Treff names chess first among the games of its Tuesday afternoon group at the Haus der Kirche, and the university sports programme offers a free Schach/Go course on Thursday evenings for those who book through its portal. In Gütersloh the Protestant parish sets out boards on Friday afternoons in the Haus der Begegnung, mostly for older players, and the city library has run a short course led by the youth warden of the Gütersloh chess club.

Detmold has two: the Schach-Café of the ZGG association on Saturday afternoons, open to beginners and experienced players, and Schach-Magie, a free Friday training for children and young people in Café HerzStück. In Paderborn the IDEA cultural centre holds a free Friday chess club for adults and children, and the city library of Minden has its own Friday chess club.
