Chess in Bielefeld and Ostwestfalen-Lippe
Bielefeld Chess covers all of Ostwestfalen-Lippe: the city of Bielefeld and the Gütersloh, Herford, Höxter, Lippe, Minden-Lübbecke and Paderborn counties. Most chess here happens on a club's weekly evening, from Minden on the Weser to Hövelhof at the source of the Ems, and many clubs say guests are welcome. Open meetings in libraries, parish houses and cafés need no membership; school chess groups take only their own pupils.

Chess960 in Ostwestfalen-Lippe
Over the board, Chess960 in Ostwestfalen-Lippe lives inside two clubs. The Schach-Klub Tönsberg in Oerlinghausen gives its last club evening before Christmas to Chess960, played as a round robin, and zweihochsechs in Bielefeld runs a Schach 960 series with one part each month, as its club page says without a date. Neither the FIDE list nor the district calendars show an open Chess960 tournament in the area.
In Chess960 the pieces behind the pawns are shuffled into one of 960 starting positions, the same for both sides, so opening preparation counts for little and the game is new from the first move. Between club evenings it can be played online at ch960.com.
Chess960 at the board in the area, as the club pages describe it:
- Chess960 evening at a club (Schach-Klub Tönsberg Oerlinghausen) — every year on the last club evening before Christmas, round robin
- Monthly Schach 960 series of a club (zweihochsechs Bielefeld) — monthly; the club page is undated
Why does one entry stand above another?
Bielefeld Chess holds 92 entries, 92 of which are current or waiting for a newer dated trace. Clubs start from the schach.in register and the league portal of the Schachverband Ostwestfalen-Lippe; tournaments from the FIDE list and the organisers; meetings, courses and school chess from parish, library, association, adult-education and school pages, the state’s school chess portal and city calendars. The pages were read between and .
Each list starts with the entry whose dated trace is the most recent. There are no scores, no paid places and no table of the strongest clubs. Where no page states a detail, the entry says so rather than guess. What the source marks and the two status lines mean, and where the area ends, is set out under how listings are verified.
Is a club or a meeting missing?
Clubs move into a new room, a parish starts a games afternoon, a school drops its chess group at the end of the year: an entry can fall behind. Send a short note with a link to a page that shows the place or the change.
